I would like you to look at these underwater pictures.  Can you count how many of each underwater creature you can see?  Now you are going to make number stories using your picture.

1 chilli – First I have 5 starfish. Then 1 more comes.  Now I have 6 starfish.

Try to add one more and then challenge yourself to add two more.  Some of the children may find it easier if they draw a new sea creature to help them add the extra ones.

2 chillies – Try adding two sets of sea creatures together.  Say it as a story and then write the number sentence.

First I have 5 starfish.  Then 2 angel fish come.  Now I have 7 altogether.

How many groups can you add together?

3 chillies – Try adding three sets of sea creatures together.  Say it as a story and then write the number sentence.

First I have 5 starfish and 2 angel fish. Then 1 oyster comes.  Now I have 8 altogether.

How many different groups can you add together?

Try this using The snail and the whale.  You could count the snails on the rock or the sea gulls.
