Science - Sports Kit and Equipment

In your house can you please find a normal t-shirt (your school t-shirt will work for this) and a sports top (e.g. a football top or a gym top).

Making observations through sight, touch etc. what do you notice about the similarities and differences? Make a note of these:

  1. Why do you think sports tops, such as gym tops, football tops etc. are made from certain materials?

Next, I want you to carry out an investigation to compare the normal t-shirt and the sports top (sorry adults - it might mean things get a bit wet!)

In this experiment you are going to investigate the change in weight when the two tops get weight. You need to make sure you weigh the tops before you do anything else!

Now you need to soak both shirts in water - to make it a fair test, make sure you;

  1. Use the same amount of water
  2. Soak them in water for the same length of time

Now you have done this can you answer the questions:

  1. How do the weights change?
  2. What are the differences?
  3. How might this affect the performance of a player?
  4. Why is a normal t-shirt not the ideal thing to wear if you were taking part in an important sporting event?
  5. How might this effect the performance of a player?

You can complete the task on a sheet of paper/workbook you have been using or type it directly onto the document below. Have fun!
