Year 4

Autumn 1 - Animals including Humans

During Autumn 1 we are working scientifically by:

  • Describing the function of the digestive system
  • Investigating and naming teeth and describing their function
  • Investigating the importance of healthy teeth
  • Using scientific terms for some major organs and body systems
  • Investigating food chains, identifying producers, predators and prey

Autumn 2 - States of Matter

In Autumn 2 we are working scientifically by:

  • Identifying and describing some solids, liquids and gases and grouping materials according to these properties
  • Observing how materials change state as they are heated or cooled and measure the temperature at which this happens in Celsius
  • Associating the rate of evaporation with temperature
  • Identifying the part played by evaporation and condensation in the water cycle

Spring 1 - Sound

During Spring 1 we are working scientifically by:

  • Recognising what a sound is
  • Recognising how sounds are made
  • Identifying how sounds are made using vibrations and that sound has to travel through a medium
  • Investigating how distance effects sound

Spring 2 - Sound

During Spring 2 we are working scientifically by:

  • Explaining and answering questions based on what I have previously learnt about sound
  • Recognising that sound gets fainter as the distance from the source increases
  • Finding patterns in pitch and volume of sound
  • Presenting everything I have learnt about sound

Summer 1 - Living things and their habitats

During Summer 1 we are working scientifically by:

  • Grouping living things in a variety of ways
  • Using classification keys to help identify and grouping living things systematically
  • Recognising that environments change and how this impacts on the living things in the environment
  • Explaining ways in which an animal is suited to its environment

Summer 2 - Electricity

During Summer 2 we are working scientifically by:

  • Identifying appliances that run on electricity
  • Constructing a simple series circuit and naming the parts
  • Identifying if a lamp will light or not, based on a simple circuit
  • Explaining the role of a switch
  • Applying knowledge of materials to recognise conductors and insulators
