Year 5

Autumn 1 - Reversible Changes

During Autumn 1 we are working scientifically by:

  • Understanding the different properties of materials
  • Investigating solutes, solvents, solutions and dissolving
  • Sorting materials based on their properties and states of matter
  • Identifying reversible and irreversible changes
  • Investigating different ways of separating materials 


Autumn 2 - Irreversible Changes

In Autumn 2 we are working scientifically by:

  • Planning an experiment investigating an irreversible change
  • Conducting an experiment investigating an irreversible change
  • Understanding the irreversible change of burning
  • Explaining what is needed for combustion
  • Investigating a chemical reaction causing an irreversible change
  • Inventing a new material 


Spring 1 - Forces

During Spring 1 we are working scientifically by:

  • Explaining that objects fall towards the Earth because of the force of gravity acting between the Earth and the object
  • Learning about a famous scientist 
  • Investigating air resistance and knowing that there is always more than one force acting on an object at any one time
  • Investigating water resistance
  • Understanding how some simple mechanical devices work

Spring 2 - Earth and Space

During Spring 2 we are working scientifically by:

  • Describing the shape, size and movement of the Earth in relation to the Sun
  • Explaining how the rotation of the Earth causes night and day
  • Collecting data and presenting it graphically to show the number of daylight hours the UK has over the year
  • Investigating how the Earth's rotation causes shadows to change throughout the course of the day
  • Using knowledge of the Earth's tilt on its axis to explain why we have seasons and their differences 

Summer 1 - Animals including Humans

During Summer 1 we are working scientifically by:

  • Identifying the gestation period of humans and compare that to other animals
  • Identifying the stages of the human life cycle
  • Comparing the life cycle of humans to that of other animals
  • Conducting an investigation in relation to body proportions
  • Explaining the changes that occur during puberty 

Summer 2 - Animals including Humans

In Summer 2 we are working scientifically by:

  • Describing the features of flowering plants and what their functions are
  • Investigating the life-cycles of some non-flowering plants
  • Describing and comparing the life-cycles of insects and amphibians 
  • Identifying the stages in the life cycles of mammals and birds and compare these to life cycles of amphibians, insects and humans
  • Exploring the life cycle of a chosen animal or plan and create a presentation comparing this to two other known life cycles
