Physical Education (PE)

Physical Education and School Sport at Thornhill Primary School is delivered  under the umbrella of  ‘Team Thornhill’. The PE team, children, staff and the wider school community are supported by a number of different partners and organisations.

All are working together to promote learning in six key areas or multi-abilities which underpin learning in  PE, extra- curricular sport and are transferable to  the learning in all other areas of the wider curriculum. As a school using the realPE approach, we refer to these areas as COGS.

These are:

Personal Skills

Social Skills

Cognitive Skills

Physical Skills

Creative Skills

Knowledge of Health and Fitness

Learning experiences are focussed specifically upon each COG in turn over each curricular year, and are revisited often. This is coupled with a clear focus upon fundamental skills, with sessions allowing a progression of skills to be practiced before applying in adapted traditional and non-traditional games.

Physical sessions are designed to promote ambitious learning with personalised outcomes. Success and failure is reviewed collaboratively and celebrated. Learners are encouraged to give feedback to  others in order to become confident peer coaches. Through the use of choice and personal best challenges, children are expected to take an active responsibility  for their learning journey.

Children are encouraged to practise and apply skills outside of their curricular PE sessions.  To achieve this,  classes  explore ways to become active for an additional 30 minutes in school each day.

The school runs a busy ASC programme, supported by Solent University, Treasure Gymnastics, Streetbeatz and Premier League Primary Stars. A full and varied School Games calendar gives Team Thornhill an opportunity to participate in taster sessions, festivals and competitive league events that provide a pathway into higher levels of competition.

Thornhill Primary School is proud to have been awarded it's first Gold School Sports Mark in 2019, retaining it through 2020 and 2021. We are currently on Bronze following the full opening of all opportunities and are working towards Gold again this year.
