Modern Foreign Languages (MFL)

At Thornhill Primary school, we teach modern foreign languages in order to provide an opening to other cultures, fostering pupils’ curiosity and deepening their understanding of the world.

In Key stage 2, pupils learn French. The teaching provides an appropriate balance of spoken and written language with the focus being on practical communication. We aim to enable pupils to understand and communicate ideas, facts and feelings in speech and writing.  During lessons, children follow the Language Angels programme of study where pupils are taught to understand and respond to spoken and written language, speak with increasing confidence, write at varying length using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt and discovered and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in French.
